1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit websites. They are widely used to make websites function properly, remember user preferences, and provide analytical reporting for website owners. Similar client-side storage technologies include web browser localStorage and sessionStorage.
2. How ANU PDFLAB Uses Cookies and Local Storage
ANU PDFLAB prioritizes user privacy. We minimize tracking and do not use cookies to track your document contents or activity across the web:
A. Strictly Necessary & Functional Storage
- Theme Preference (
localStorage): We store your chosen display theme (lightordark) in browserlocalStorageunder the keyanu_pdflab_theme. This ensures that your screen remains comfortable across all pages without requiring a user account. - CSRF Security Tokens (
sessionStorage): When using the contact form, a cryptographic session token protects against unauthorized cross-site request forgery attacks. This token expires when you close your browser tab.
B. Advertising Cookies (Google AdSense)
When Google AdSense is enabled, Google and third-party advertising vendors set cookies to serve relevant advertisements:
- Google uses cookies (such as the DoubleClick cookie) to serve ads based on your prior visits to ANU PDFLAB or other websites on the internet.
- These cookies help prevent the same ad from showing repeatedly and allow advertisers to measure ad campaign efficiency.
- Google's advertising cookies do not collect or read the contents of any PDF or Word files you process on ANU PDFLAB.
C. Analytical Cookies (Optional)
If Google Analytics is configured by the site administrator, aggregate performance metrics (such as page views, visitor country, and browser type) are collected to help us optimize server bandwidth and user navigation. Document names and document contents are strictly excluded from all analytics events.
3. Consent for Visitors in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK Data Protection Act, and the ePrivacy Directive, visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland must be provided clear choices regarding non-essential cookies. When advertising is active, ANU PDFLAB supports integration with Google-certified Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) adhering to the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF v2.2).
4. How to Manage and Disable Cookies
You can choose to disable cookies through your individual browser options. Detailed instructions for managing cookies in major web browsers are available at:
- Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection
- Microsoft Edge: Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions
- Apple Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Block all cookies
To opt out of personalized advertising across Google's network, visit Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info.
