GST Calculator for Adding or Removing Tax from an Amount

Quick GST estimation

The GST Calculator helps estimate tax when GST is added to a base amount or already included in a total. Enter an amount, choose 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%, and select the required operation. Add GST shows the tax amount and final total. Remove Included GST separates a GST-inclusive total into its estimated base value and tax component.

Difference between adding and removing GST

When GST is added, tax is calculated as a percentage of the base amount. When GST is already included, simply subtracting the same percentage from the total is incorrect. The inclusive calculation divides the total by one plus the tax rate expressed as a decimal, then treats the remaining difference as GST. The tool applies these two methods separately.

Example of adding GST

If the base amount is ₹1,000 and the selected rate is 18%, the estimated GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. This is useful when preparing a quotation, checking a price before tax or understanding the effect of a tax rate. Actual invoice treatment can depend on product classification, place of supply and other rules.

Example of removing included GST

If ₹1,180 already includes GST at 18%, the estimated base amount is ₹1,000 and the GST component is ₹180. This reverse calculation is useful for reviewing an inclusive price. Choose the correct rate; using the wrong slab will produce an incorrect breakup.

Important tax disclaimer

This calculator provides a mathematical estimate and does not determine whether GST applies, which rate is legally correct, whether a transaction is intra-state or inter-state, or how CGST, SGST and IGST should be reported. Tax rules, classifications and compliance requirements can change. Use invoices and official guidance, and consult a qualified tax professional for filing or business decisions.

Tips for reliable use

Confirm whether the entered amount is exclusive or inclusive of GST before choosing a button. Check the applicable rate from a reliable source. Keep invoice-level rounding rules in mind because totals can differ by a few paise when tax is rounded per item instead of on the overall value. Treat the displayed result as an estimate and verify important calculations.
